I am an Associate Professor of Data Science at the University of Virginia. Originally from Germany, I studied Biology at the University of Tübingen and conducted my graduate research in developmental neurobiology at the University of Oregon. After a postdoctoral position at UC Berkeley and Stanford University, I spent a brief stint in industry before joining UVA in 2013 as an Assistant Professor of Biology.
Before joining the School of Data Science, I served as Associate Director for Research Computing User Services, where I led a team of computational scientists and oversaw technical support, training, research collaborations, and community outreach.
Outside of work, I enjoy trail running and camping with family and friends.

BSDS undergraduate studentJian Wang
I am Jian Wang, an undergraduate researcher at S2IL, working on computational image processing and data science applications in biology. I am interested in automated data processing & analyses in applications such as urban planning and biomedicine. Outside of the lab, you can usually find me listening to music, writing short stories, or debating philosophical questions. I am always eager to learn new tools and connect with fellow students and researchers.
